After forty-five days in power Liz Truss has resigned.

Her announcement came after the near complete evaporation of her political authority which saw her government crash the financial markets, lose her Chancellor and Home Secretary, and shed the confidence of almost all her own MPs.  Truss will be the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.

Liz Truss was elected to the leadership of the Tory Party and Prime Minister of the UK in September 2022.  And almost immediately she was in trouble.  In her resignation speech Truss announced she was going after holding talks with Sir Graham Brady, chair of the influential 1922 committee of Conservative MPs, and her closest allies, Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey and Tory chairman Jake Jerry.  Truss said “Given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”
