Recently, while sitting in a traffic jam, I decided to change radio stations, and turned the car radio dial to Kiss FM.  Not being a regular listener to pop music, I was totally unfamiliar with the tunes and artists I was now listening to.  One House song caught my attention.  It had the regular, monotonous beat of all House music, and only four words made up its lyric “I love you Baby”.  This lyric, like the beat, was repeated over and over throughout the track, and I wondered whether the artist understood the import of what she was singing.

I was reminded of the BBC’s new quiz show, The Wheel, which I had watched the Saturday night before.  One of the show’s contestants was asked “In the UK how soon do dating couples tell each other ‘I love you?’”    A list of multiple choice answers was put forward:

  • 0-3 months
  • 4-6 months
  • 7-9 months
  • 10-12 months

After some discussion, the contestant decided it must be 4-6 months, because no-one could possibly get to know someone well enough to say ‘I love you’ in 0-3 months.
