“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8).  This Bible verse describes God.  It simply says “God is love”. In other words God is the embodiment of love.  If you want to understand love you should study God.  It also says that in order for us to love we need to know God.  These are strong statements that the majority of humankind pays no attention to.  Instead we seek to find love on our own without any regard for God and as a result have a tendency to confuse love with other emotions.  In other words we get it all wrong.

The Bible has a great deal to say on the subject of love in relation to God.  It tells us God’s love is everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3).  Every day we receive a fresh supply (Lamentations 3:22,23).  Jesus loves us so much He sacrificed His own life in order to save humanity (John 15:13).  The Holy Spirit loves us (Romans 5:5).  Then we are told that if we love God we will love each other.  In fact we cannot love God and hate one another (1 John 4:20).  Therefore in order to be able to love a good starting point is to get to know God, for
