What a mess we can make of our lives!

We each start out with the very best intentions.  We look for happiness, success, love, popularity, fulfilment.  Some of us even look for fame through which we think we will find all of the above.  But when we have put forward our best attempts, and then look back on the life we have made for ourselves, it can be such a disappointment.  So many bad choices, so many regrets.  We survey our pasts and realise we could have conducted ourselves so much better.

Jesus, in His sermon on the mount (Matthew 5), shows just how well He understands the human condition.  The Beatitudes give us hope and encouragement.  They proclaim that when we review our lives and realise that despite all our efforts we are still poor in spirit, and seeking something better, nevertheless we are blessed.  That is when we can stop looking to ourselves for the solving of life’s issues and perplexities, and turn to the One who has all the solutions.
