The motto of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is taken from a Bible verse “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32).  These are the words of Jesus who when speaking to an audience of believers assured them that their faith in Him was an assent to the truth which would free them from deception and error.  I wonder whether the CIA’s use of Jesus’ words is a proclamation that its work uncovers the truth.

Despite its lofty ideals the CIA is notorious for having little or no connection with truth.  Its operations are steeped in secrecy and misdirection.  It is known for its assassination attempts on foreign heads of government (like Fidel Castro).  Its interference in foreign affairs.  Its involvement in the Watergate scandal.  And no doubt these are just the tip of the iceberg.
